Well that was easy – Direct Ethernet Connection from Win7 to Olduino Server

February 21, 2014

To run the olduino server I have it cabled by ethernet to a router and to update the code I would drag my laptop over and connect serially.  Since the laptop has an ethernet port I figured I would get a crossover cable and hook it up directly to the laptop then some jiggery pokery with ip addresses and i’d be able to work away from the router.

Turns out it was much simpler.  Crossover cables aren’t much needed any more – the adapters are smart enough to do it automatically.  After reading http://pihw.wordpress.com/guides/direct-network-connection/ I just hooked up the same regular cable and told the olduino to use IP address 169.254.180.2 (which puts it on the network that the windows box defaults to if it can’t find a dhcp server).
